I rarely share personal photos here, but since I’ve been loving Happy Place sessions the last few months, I decided to share a little bit about our own Happy Place.  About three years ago our family moved back to Houston after a four year “vacation” in San Diego.  We try to go back as often as we can because we love and miss it so much…the friends, the weather, the beach, the hills….gah, I could go on and on.

This summer, we knew we wanted to take the kids back to Disneyland but we decided to add on from there.  Andy’s sister and her family recently relocated to Washington state and we had been anxious to visit, so we figured..why not just extend the trip and combine the two?  So our original week long California getaway turned into an almost three week adventure exploring the Pacific Northwest and ending up in Southern California.  It. Was. Amazing.

Rather than go on about it, I’ll stop and share through pictures and video (if you make it all the way to the bottom of the post, you will find my first personal  Life in Motion video).

I did not start out to be a birth photographer.

Even as recently as a year ago, I was turning down inquiries for this kind of session because if I’m being honest…I was little intimidated.  I was worried about how I could be “on call” with having my own two kids….I wondered if I was ready…would I be able to capture those all important moments for such a monumental day?

Then last September one of my dearest friends asked me to be at the hospital for her C-section….not just there, but documenting the moments and anticipation leading up to and welcoming her son into this world.  After that I was hooked.

Two months ago, a client text me at 10:45pm letting me know her labor was starting.  After making a few last minute arrangements to cover my own family responsibilities, I headed to the hospital and spent an incredible night watching a family of 3 become 4.

Harvey’s mom let me know a few months ago that she would need a C-section and gave me the date to put on my calendar.  I had two C-sections myself, and one perk is you know exactly when your little one’s birthday is going to be!  I will neither confirm or deny that I went to get a blowout shortly before my son was born.

We continued to adjust our plan based on her doctor’s visits.  I met with Huy and Thuy a few months before their due date to answer any questions they may have and just get to know them a little better.  I wanted them to feel completely at ease having me there with them on such an important day.  We bonded over music and coffee.

As we got closer to Harvey’s birthday to be we discovered that even C-section babies can also be unpredictable.  His due date got moved around a few times based on her doctor visits, but the day finally arrived and I met them at the hospital around 3:30.  I want to share his birth story with you below.  There are several pictures but if you actually make it to the end of this post, you will see my favorite part…his Life in Motion video.

I had the extraordinary opportunity to be in the OR for Harvey’s birth and witness it all.  This is often an unknown in C-sections…it’s usually left up to the doctor and anesthesia, however Huy works in anesthesia at the hospital and had gotten permission for me to be there.  It was so amazing to get to see Harvey’s first breath and get photos of those moments for his parents that even they couldn’t see from where they were.

If you or someone you know is expecting a baby and interested in capturing these beautiful moments that become such a blur, please contact me.  I would love to be your birth photographer and give to you what I so wish I had for my own.

We decided to do Grace’s 18 month old session at home because Mom knew that’s where everything she loved would be.  I was excited because I think in home sessions are the best thing ever….they capture your family in their happy place, everyone is more relaxed…and there is AIR CONDITIONING….because…it’s Houston and summer is upon us.

We even got to do a Life in Motion video, which you can see at the end of this post.  I so wish I could go back and see more of my own kiddos in the middle of toddler strutting, peek a boo, and belly rolls out in all of their glory!

It wasn’t that long ago that I was sharing Garner’s birth story with you, but we all know how time has that pesky way of going by way too fast and this little guy is already seven months old.  I was beyond excited when Kat asked me to do an in home “Happy Place” session with her family a few weeks ago.  We wanted to let the boys have fun while capturing pictures in sweet spots of their home.   These rooms not only capsulate our memories…they are where true joy, love and comfort are found daily in this stage of life.

These types of Happy Place sessions are my new far and away favorite…..and make sure to scroll down all the way to the bottom to see their Life in Motion add on video!

I adore this family so much.  I met them at Dylan’s big brother’s newborn session a couple of years ago, and that session easily became one of my favorites.  Both Kara and Ryan are so warm and loving…with their beautiful kiddos and each other.  They immediately made me feel welcome, and it’s been such a pleasure to get to know them better over the last couple of years.  I’ve had a chance to watch Deklan grow and step into the big brother role, and I was SO excited to meet little brother, Dylan.  I say “little” very lightly because at almost twelve pounds, he was not little at all, but such pure perfection with his squishy rolls.

I am so excited to now be able to offer newborn “Life in Motion” videos as an optional add on for my newborn sessions.  I would love for you to take a look and see how capturing these small but huge moments on video, while incorporating stills set to music creates the perfect keepsake.

One of my very dear friends, Kat, asked me a few months back if I would take pictures at the birth of their fourth sweet baby.  I think it took me a few moments before I caught my breath again because ..WOW.  What an honor.  I was overwhelmed at the thought of even getting to witness such a beautiful day, let alone having the opportunity to take pictures and capturing these important moments…..I mean, that’s a little bit of pressure!

Kat and Craig were both so unbelievable and open….and I just told them to pretend I wasn’t there.  Ha!

And if that wasn’t enough….both Kat and Craig wanted to wait to find out if their last little one would be adding more blue or a splash of pink to the family….we were all in a bit of suspense.  They did know that either way, Garner would be the perfect completion to their family…one they had been waiting and hoping for for a very long time.

I also decided to try something a little different…something that I haven’t done before.

I added a “life in motion” aspect to this session, and  I think I’m hooked y’all.  I hope to be doing lots more of these in the future.
